While growing up in the ’50s and ’60s it was all about cars, and the Pontiac brand was always my favorite. Pontiac always seemed to have the latest advancements in design and style. In October 1967, I saw the new ’68 GTO on the cover of a car magazine with its new design and style (400cu 350-horsepower engine, wide-track suspension, hideaway headlights and his and hers Hurst shifter). I knew in a glance I had to own it. I purchased it from Myrtle Pontiac in Queens, N.Y., and the GTO was delivered for Christmas. We drove the GTO for over 150,000 miles. Today, our ’68 GTO is considered an original-owned matching-numbered classic muscle car. We love the attention we receive at car shows and cruises. We especially enjoy meeting like-minded people who love the GTO. It makes us feel like teenagers again! On Dec. 23, 2017, we are planning to celebrate the GTO 50th anniversary. Today, our GTO is better than brand new. It’s beautiful, and, when I gaze at it in our garage, many wonderful memories come rushing back.
